It was a cold Monday morning when it all started. A deep fog had descended upon the streets like a blanket suffocating all life good and decent from this wretched city. The noises and smells muted, I made my way slowly into the alley. I looked down at the mangled corpse of a once proud archer of Florence, beaten and broken; his blood spilling into the gutter. The town archers had been stationed along the roof tops of the city ever since the attempted jail break a few days ago, but this was just for show. I never expected to have one die; let alone murdered. I gazed around the small crowd that was forming at the scene, news travels fast in this town. I assessed that these were just concerned citizens. There even seemed to be a group of priests approaching, obviously to bless the body.

“Inspector Da Vinci,” a young guard no older than 19 said as he approached the body prodding at it with the tip of his sword, “what do you think happened to him? Did he fall?”

“No, even though the man smells of liquor he could not have fallen. You see,” I rolled the body over exposing the horrific sight; he had been stabbed right through the throat. “This is no accident; someone has it out for the city guard.”

“I saw him!” A voice rang out from the crowd. I turned around to see who it had been.

“Who said that, come forward.” A small man dressed in rags walked forward, malnourished and clearly not in the favor of God.

“I saw him with my own eyes, I did. I was walking down the street here and this here man just fell out in front of me. Nearly crushed me he did, but I was quick. I looked up and I saw him. A ghostly outline of a man dressed in all white. He was looking down, I blinked my eyes and he was gone; nothing more than a shadow across the sky.”

Clearly this man was delusional or possessed; men do not fly across the sky. He was now my number one suspect, it was time to go back to office and think.

“Arrest that man.” I said pointing to the beggar.

“Wait! I have done nothing wrong, I—

A guard hit him in the chest collapsing him like an accordion. Two more slowly pulled him away.

“NO, I am innocent!” The creation screamed, “Wait, he is over there! Right there, the man I see him!” I turned around to see this accusation to see the man pointing at a group of priests blessing the body. I couldn’t believe what this world was coming to, blaming priests. I went on my way.
